Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right, yet many rural communities in Nigeria, including Kaugama Local Government Area in Jigawa State, struggle to obtain safe and reliable sources of water. Contaminated water sources pose serious health risks and contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases. Photography has the potential to document the challenges surrounding access to clean water, from polluted sources to the efforts of local communities and NGOs working to provide clean water solutions. This study explores how photography can be used to highlight the issue of access to clean drinking water in Kaugama LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite numerous initiatives to improve access to clean drinking water in Kaugama LGA, many communities still rely on unsafe water sources, leading to significant public health concerns. Photography can be used to document the water access challenges faced by local communities, raise awareness about the importance of clean water, and highlight the efforts being made to improve access. However, the role of photography in advocating for better water infrastructure and access remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate how photography can raise awareness about this critical issue.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it highlights the role of photography in documenting and raising awareness about access to clean drinking water, a critical public health issue. The findings can contribute to policy advocacy, development programs, and public awareness campaigns focused on improving water access in rural areas.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the use of photography in highlighting access to clean drinking water in Kaugama LGA, Jigawa State. It does not cover other regions or issues related to water management outside the study area. The research is limited to the visual documentation of water access issues and does not delve into technical aspects of water infrastructure.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Access to Clean Drinking Water: The availability of safe, potable water for drinking and domestic use.
  2. Photography: The practice of taking photographs to document and raise awareness about social issues, such as water access.
  3. Advocacy: The process of raising awareness and influencing decisions to promote social change.
